Tuesday on The Robert Scott Bell Show:

Federal officials hatch a three-pronged defense against another ‘tripledemic’ To prevent a repeat of last winter’s “tripledemic” of respiratory illnesses, Americans will be encouraged to roll up their sleeves not just for flu shots but for two other vaccines, one of them entirely new. Federal health officials have already asked manufacturers to produce reformulated COVID-19 vaccines to be distributed later this year. Recently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention took an additional step, endorsing two new vaccines against respiratory syncytial virus for older Americans. The three shots — flu, COVID and RSV — may help to reduce hospitalizations and deaths later this year. But there are uncertainties about how the vaccines are best administered, who is most likely to benefit, and what the risks may be. For older and immunocompromised Americans, all three vaccines are a “godsend,” said Dr. Ofer Levy, director of the precision vaccines program at Boston Children’s Hospital and an adviser to the Food and Drug Administration. “The number of elders who die of viral infection every winter in our intensive care units, and also sometimes in the summer, is large — it’s in the tens of thousands of individuals,” Levy said. “Each of these vaccines is a huge win.” Yet it’s unclear how many Americans will opt for the shots. Some 71% of adults ages 65 and older got a flu shot this past winter, but only about 43% chose to get the COVID booster. The misery of the past winter may help change minds. The flu may have led to as many as 58,000 deaths, peaking in December, according to the CDC. COVID claimed roughly 50,000 lives between November and March.

Being overweight is now linked to 18 types of cancer: new study For years, doctors have sounded the alarm over the link between cancer and obesity. Being overweight or obese raises the risk of developing several different types of cancer, including breast, bowel, kidney and pancreatic. In all, 13 types of the disease were previously known to be associated with overweight body types — but now, that number has climbed to 18 different cancers. And the risk of developing cancer begin when people are young — between the ages 18 and 40. “The results of our study support a re-evaluation of the cancer burden associated with overweight and obesity, which currently is likely underestimated,” said Dr. Heinz Freisling, co-author of the study, as quoted in the Independent. The researchers looked at the electronic health records of more than 2.6 million people in Catalonia, Spain. The people were 40 years or older in 2009 and were then free of cancer. But by 2018 — just nine years later — over 225,000 of the study participants had been diagnosed with cancer. The researchers also sorted the data by including decades of the participants’ health records showing a body mass index of 25 or greater, which indicates a person may be overweight or obese. The results of the study, published in Nature Communications, revealed that having a BMI of 25 or greater led to a greater risk of developing 18 different types of cancer. Specifically, the researchers found that those who were overweight in early adulthood — ages 18 to 40 — had an increased risk of cancer.

Hour 2

Popular ‘Benzo’ drugs linked to suicide, brain damage — even if you stop taking them: study Over 30 million Americans a year use benzodiazepines, or “benzos,” including Xanax, Valium, Ativan and Klonopin. Benzodiazepines are prescribed to treat anxiety disorders, insomnia, muscle spasms, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, seizures and epilepsy. But this widely used class of drugs is linked to severe side effects and life impacts that can last for years — even after people have stopped taking the drugs — a new study finds. “Patients have been reporting long-term effects from benzodiazepines for over 60 years. I am one of those patients,” Dr. Christy Huff, a cardiologist and co-author of the study, said in a news release. Huff, who is co-director of a patient advocacy group, Benzodiazepine Information Coalition, noted that she took the medication as prescribed and has not taken any benzodiazepines in four years, yet still experiences symptoms daily. “My life is quite frankly a living hell,” Huff wrote in a 2016 statement on the group’s website. “The only thing that has kept me going is the fact that I have a husband and 5-year-old daughter,” she added. “Honestly this is probably the only reason I have not ended my life.” The new research, published in PLOS One, includes a lengthy list of side effects that a majority of benzo users experienced more than a year after they stopped taking the drugs. Those long-lasting symptoms include low energy, difficulty focusing, memory loss, anxiety, insomnia, sensitivity to light and sounds, digestive problems, symptoms triggered by food and drink, muscle weakness and body pain. Alarmingly, users also struggled with severe life impacts: 54.7% reported suicide attempts or suicidal thoughts, for example.

Special Guest Tim James

Tim is one of those guys that will leave you feeling younger and more energetic just by hearing him speak. His passion flows out of him like a fresh waterfall in a dry desert. He’s turning 50 but feels like he’s 18 (with more energy!) What’s his secret?

After suffering from multiple health issues, including rectal bleeding, two separate skin issues, chronic acid indigestion and surgery to remove one of his organs due to serious digestive issues, Tim knew something had to change.

But it was only after watching his closest ones die of cancer and the untimely death of his younger brother that he finally decided to take action. Tim’s journey led him to a shocking discovery which helped his friend beat cancer and transform every area of his life. Feeling charged with a duty to help others he started sharing his knowledge with anyone that would listen.

This led him to producing his own chemical free food products. ‘Chemical Free Body’ was born. Tim’s inbox is constantly flooded with people singing and dancing about how his products and advice have given them a life they couldn’t believe was possible. His story will have you laughing, crying and gasping but most importantly he will give you the recipe to a longer, happier and healthier life.

Question of The Day!

I have basal cell carcinoma on my face.It started as a small scab that wouldn’t heal and now its about 3/4 of an inch that looks like a scar. I heard about Curaderm Bec5 cream as a natural way of treating rather than a Mohs surgery. What are your thoughts on Curaderm and are their any other treatments you recommend? Also any recommendations on treating Sebaceous Hyperplasia?
Thanks Patrick
