‘More Harmful Than Mercury’: PFAS ‘Forever Chemicals’ Found in Freshwater Fish This article discusses the alarming levels of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), also known as ‘forever chemicals’, found in freshwater fish. PFAS, which accumulate in the environment and in our bodies, have been detected in significant amounts in fish across various states in the U.S. The consumption of a single serving of freshwater fish can equate to drinking water contaminated with high levels of PFAS for a month. The article highlights the lack of federal guidance on safe consumption levels and the particular risk to rural, Indigenous, and low-income communities that rely on subsistence fishing.

Some doctors are ditching the scale, saying focusing on weight drives misdiagnoses This article explores a growing trend among doctors who are adopting a ‘weight-neutral’ approach in their clinics. These doctors argue that focusing on weight can lead to misdiagnoses and counterproductive health outcomes. They emphasize treating patients regardless of their weight and recommend lifestyle changes like exercise and nutritious eating for their inherent health benefits, rather than as means to weight loss. This approach aims to address the health needs of patients more holistically and avoid the stigma and biases often associated with weight.

Why ‘Healthspan’ May Be More Important Than Lifespan The article discusses the concept of ‘healthspan’ versus ‘lifespan’, emphasizing the importance of living not just longer, but healthier. While average lifespans have increased, the years lived in full health have not kept pace, leading to a gap between lifespan and healthspan. The focus is shifting towards extending healthspan, which involves not only medical advancements but also addressing broader health issues like hypertension, diabetes, and lifestyle factors. The article highlights various research efforts and initiatives aimed at improving healthspan, including lifestyle changes, medical treatments, and emerging therapies targeting aging.

Had You Known, Would You Have Taken the Jab? This article discusses a lawsuit filed by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton against Pfizer, alleging that the company misrepresented the efficacy of its COVID-19 vaccine and conspired to censor public discourse. The lawsuit claims Pfizer’s vaccine only offered a 0.85% reduction in risk, contrary to the company’s claims of higher efficacy. It also alleges that Pfizer did not test the vaccine against virus variants and falsely claimed it could prevent transmission. The suit seeks to hold Pfizer accountable for what it describes as fraudulent practices that led to record profits for the pharmaceutical industry.

The UN Is Threatening Privacy Under Pretense of New Cybercrime Treaty The article raises concerns about the latest UN Cybercrime Treaty draft, which the digital rights group EFF describes as a significant step backward. The draft is criticized for broadening its scope beyond cybercrimes, potentially allowing states to compel engineers or employees to undermine security measures, posing a threat to encryption. The treaty could enable access to data located abroad even if it violates the host nation’s privacy protections, leading to potential overreach in national and international investigations.

The Label Says ‘Product of the USA’ — But It Probably Came From Somewhere Else This article reveals that more than 85% of the grass-fed beef sold in the U.S. is not actually raised in the U.S., despite being labeled as ‘Product of the USA’. This discrepancy is due to a loophole in the labeling law, which allows imported beef to be labeled as a U.S. product if any value is added domestically, such as packaging or processing. The article highlights the challenges faced by American farmers who produce grass-fed beef, as they compete against less expensive imported beef.

EPA Wants to Rid US Water Systems of Lead in 10 Years The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed new rules requiring most U.S. cities to replace lead water pipes within 10 years. This initiative is part of the Biden administration’s effort to reduce lead in drinking water and prevent public health crises like those in Flint, Michigan, and Washington, D.C. The overhaul, which is the strongest in over three decades, aims to improve public health by reducing lead exposure, which is linked to various health issues. The proposal includes stricter standards for lead levels and better public information about elevated lead levels in water.
