Hour 1

Trump Nominates Susan Monarez as CDC Director President Donald Trump has nominated Dr. Susan Monarez, the current acting director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), to assume the role permanently. Monarez, who has been serving as acting director since January 23, 2025, previously held the position of deputy director at the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H). Her extensive background includes roles at the White House’s Office of Science and Technology Policy and the National Security Council, where she focused on enhancing biomedical innovation and pandemic preparedness. Additionally, Monarez has held leadership positions at the Department of Homeland Security and has led international initiatives to promote health innovation research and development. If confirmed by the Senate, Monarez will be the first CDC director to undergo the confirmation process, a requirement instituted by Congress in 2022. President Trump emphasized that Monarez brings decades of experience championing innovation, transparency, and strong public health systems, and highlighted her understanding of the importance of protecting children, communities, and the future. He also noted that Americans have lost confidence in the CDC due to political bias and mismanagement, and expressed confidence that Monarez will work closely with Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to restore trust and prioritize disease prevention.

Schools Can’t ‘Forcibly Vaccinate’ Kids Without Parents’ Consent, North Carolina Supreme Court Rules The North Carolina Supreme Court ruled that a lawsuit filed by Emily Happel, whose 14-year-old son, Tanner Smith, was vaccinated for COVID-19 at school without consent, can proceed. In August 2021, following a COVID-19 outbreak among Western Guilford High School’s football team, players were required to undergo testing or obtain medical clearance. Tanner visited a school-hosted clinic for testing, unaware that vaccinations were also being administered. Despite his objections and the absence of parental consent, clinic workers vaccinated him after failing to reach his mother by phone. Happel sued the Guilford County Board of Education and the Old North State Medical Society, alleging battery and constitutional violations. Lower courts dismissed the lawsuit, citing the federal Public Readiness and Emergency Preparedness (PREP) Act, which provides immunity during public health emergencies. However, the state Supreme Court determined that the PREP Act does not preempt state constitutional claims, affirming parents’ rights to control their children’s medical decisions and individuals’ rights to refuse non-mandatory medical treatment. The case will return to the North Carolina Court of Appeals to address state law and constitutional questions.

RFK Jr. Unveils New ‘Transparency’ Tool That Lets You Search Chemical Contaminants In Foods The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has launched the Chemical Contaminants Transparency Tool, an online database designed to provide the public with detailed information on chemical contaminants present in foods. This initiative, led by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., aims to enhance transparency and modernize food chemical safety standards. The database includes information on tolerances, action levels, guidance levels, derived intervention levels, recommended maximum levels, and advisory levels for various contaminants. Notable chemicals listed are Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), Chlordane, and insecticides like Aldrin and Dieldrin. Acting FDA Commissioner Sara Brenner acknowledged that while the ideal scenario would involve no contaminants in the food supply, their presence can occur during growing, storage, or processing stages. She advises consumers to maintain a varied diet rich in nutrient-dense foods across all main food groups to mitigate potential exposure effects. This tool reflects the FDA’s commitment to providing Americans with authentic, informed consent about their food consumption, aligning with broader efforts to promote public health. In conjunction with this initiative, Kennedy announced “Operation Stork Speed,” targeting the safety and quality of domestic baby formula supplies. This operation includes actions such as updating nutrient reviews, increasing testing for contaminants in infant formulas, extending personal importation policies, and collaborating with scientific bodies to address research gaps related to health outcomes associated with formula feeding. The Daily Wire+1Reuters+1

‘Forever Chemicals’ in Drinking Water Linked to Increased Cancer Risk Recent studies have established a concerning link between per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), commonly referred to as “forever chemicals,” in drinking water and an elevated risk of various cancers. PFAS are synthetic chemicals widely used in industrial applications and consumer products for their resistance to water, grease, and stains. Their persistence in the environment and human body has raised alarms about potential health impacts. Research indicates that exposure to PFAS-contaminated drinking water is associated with higher incidences of cancers such as kidney, testicular, prostate, and ovarian. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has responded by establishing enforceable drinking water standards for six types of PFAS, aiming to mitigate these health risks. However, these regulations face challenges from water systems and industry groups in federal court, reflecting the complexity of addressing widespread environmental contaminants. Additionally, legislators in states like Vermont and California are advocating for stricter PFAS limits, underscoring the urgency of protecting public health from these persistent chemicals. Children’s Health Defense

California Lawmakers Move to Ban Ultraprocessed Foods From School Lunches California legislators have introduced Assembly Bill 1264 (AB-1264), aiming to phase out ultraprocessed foods from public school meals by 2032. The bill mandates the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) to define “ultraprocessed foods” and identify particularly harmful products. This initiative responds to scientific evidence linking ultraprocessed food consumption to health issues such as obesity, heart disease, and cancer. The bill has garnered bipartisan support, reflecting a commitment to improving children’s health and eating habits. Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel, who introduced the bill, emphasized the role of schools in offering healthier food options to combat unhealthy eating habits. The legislation builds on previous efforts, including the California School Food Safety Act, which banned certain artificial dyes in school foods. If enacted, AB-1264 would position California as a leader in promoting nutritious food environments in schools, potentially influencing national standards and encouraging food manufacturers to reformulate products for broader markets.
