Tuesday on The Robert Scott Bell Show:

To work for the Harris campaign you have to be ‘up to date’ on unnecessary boosters The article critiques the Harris campaign’s policy requiring employees to be “up to date” on COVID-19 boosters, labelingit as anti-science. The author argues that the CDC’s recommendation for annual COVID boosters, even for those who have already contracted the virus, lacks evidence of improved outcomes for everyone, particularly younger people and those who have had COVID-19 multiple times. The author asserts that the harms of repeated doses likely outweigh the benefits for these groups, and even for vulnerable populations like nursing home residents, there is no conclusive data to support the benefits of annual boosters. The article suggests that the Harris campaign’s policy is driven more by irrational COVID fears and a desire to appease the progressive wing of the Democratic Party than by scientific evidence. The author criticizes the campaign for endorsing a medical intervention without sufficient data and calls for a policy shift that relies on rigorous, randomized studies rather than political or ideological motivations. The article concludes that such a mandate reflects the broader issue of political interference in health decisions, where public policy is influenced more by popular opinion than by scientific fact.

Special Guest James Lyons-Weiler

James “Jack” Lyons-Weiler, PhD is a Pittsburgh-area scientist, lecturer, and author, who has worked collaboratively for over twenty years on over one hundred research studies. After conducting research in Amazonia on prehistorical shifts in climate change, he focused on questions of how to best understand evolutionary biology, and to questions on the origins of biological diversity. Thanks to a Sloan Foundation fellowship, he was then able to shift focus to biomedical problems in cancer, diabetes, heart disease, infectious disease and many other aspects of clinical, biomedical and translational research. To provide a lasting monument to his mother, and to help others share advances in cancer research, he served as the Founding Editor-in-Chief of the open access, peer-reviewed research journal Cancer Informatics (Libertas Academica). An expert in study design, complex data analysis, genetics and systems biology, he has written three books: “Ebola: An Evolving Story” (2015), “Cures vs. Profits: Successes in Translational Research” (2016), and “The Environmental and Genetic Causes of Autism” (2016). For “Causes”, he reviewed over 3,000 research studies, and he cited >2,000 in the final product. He is currently CEO/Director of The Institute for Pure and Applied Knowledge, which conducts research without profit motive to “Reduce Human Pain and Suffering Through Knowledge.” A regular featured guest on many radio shows focused on public health, Dr. Lyons-Weiler has reached millions with his defense of science as a way of knowing. He sees the public’s current widespread distrust in science as misplaced, because individual scientists and corporations should be held accountable when they mislead the public for profit motives, not the entire enterprise of science.

US HHS Declaration of Emergency for all Influenza A Strains U.S. Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Xavier Becerra expanded the federal emergency powers by declaring a public health emergencyfor all Influenza A strains, including those that pose a potential pandemic threat. This declaration, made in August 2024, builds upon a previous determination from 2013, which focused specifically on the avian influenza A (H79N) virus. The current decision is based on the perceived significant public health and national security risks associated with these viruses, which have the potential to cause widespread outbreaks. The declaration grants HHS additional authority to implement measures aimed at mitigating the spread of these viruses, including the development and distribution of vaccines and antiviral treatments. However, the broad scope of this emergency declaration has sparked concern and debate, with critics questioning the motivations behind such an expansive use of emergency powers, especially in a post-pandemic context. The article emphasizes the importance of transparency in government actions and urges the public to remain vigilant and informed about the evolving public health policies that could have far-reaching implications for individual freedoms and national security. As the situation develops, the author calls for critical assessment of the measures being implemented under this new emergency framework, stressing the need for a balanced approach that protects public health without infringing on civil liberties.

MPOX #FearPorn Peddling on X: Shutterstock Photo of Smallpox Blister Used to Stoke Fears of MPOX A post on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, falsely claimed that a Shutterstockimage showing smallpox blisters was actually an image of Mpox, stoking unfounded fears about the virus. The image was used by an anonymous account to spread alarm, a tactic the author describes as “fear porn.” A quick reverse image search using Tineye revealed that the image was incorrectly labeled, confirming it as a stock photo of smallpox and not Mpox. The incident highlights the ongoing issue of misinformation on social media, particularly regarding public health topics, where images and data are often misrepresented to manipulate public perception. The author criticizes this misuse of imagery and calls on Elon Musk to take action against such misleading content on his platform. The article warns that continued misinformation of this kind can exacerbate public anxiety, erode trust in health authorities, and ultimately hinder effective public health responses. The author stresses the need for vigilance in verifying information shared on social media, especially when it involves sensitive health issues.

Hour 2

COVID vaccine mandates linked to increased uptake among healthcare workers A study published in JAMA Network Open found that state-level COVID-19 vaccine mandates for healthcare workers in the United States led to a nearly 4% increase in vaccination rates compared to states without mandates. The study analyzed data from over 31,000 healthcare workers across 45 states and revealed that the impact of mandates was particularly significant in states that did not offer a “test-out” option. In those states, the proportion of healthcare workers who completed or intended to complete the primary vaccination series increased by 3.64 percentage points. The findings suggest that vaccine mandates are effective in increasing vaccination rates among healthcare workers, although they remain controversial and politically sensitive. The study highlights the importance of understanding the specific factors that contribute to the success of such mandates, which can inform future public health policies. However, the study also noted that mandates with a “test-out” option did not significantly increase vaccination rates, emphasizing the need for stricter policies to achieve higher compliance.

Special Guest Sara Woods Kender

I began my journey into herbalism at a young age.  Always spending hours in the woods near my rural home of Alton, NH – I found sanctuary there – spending time with the trees and plants of the forest; hours of walking along logging roads of past and present closely observing mosses & ferns on the forest floor; maneuvering through gnarled roots, streams, and glacial till and just feeling at home, at peace.  With my father’s love of subsistence gardening and my grandmother’s love of ornamentals, I came by it honestly. There was always something missing to me though. Always something in the back of my mind prompting me to take it a step further. After much reading and experimenting with the plants on my own, I became an herbalist in the Summer of 2008.  I completed the seven-month Herbal Apprenticeship and finally found the few stepping stones that would become my path.  I continue my herbal journey learning, healing, and being in contact with people who seek healing as well as give it. I also became an ordained minister receiving my certificate from the Universal Life Church in 2008.  This allows me to do hands-on healing channeling the universal life force of Reiki in the Usui- Tibetan Enhanced Tradition. I continue to participate in workshops, conferences and classes to hone my skills as a  healer and broaden my knowledge as an herbalist.

Long COVID Symptoms: Internal Tremors and Vibrations Internal tremors and vibrations are emerging as distressing symptoms for some Long COVID patients, characterized by sensations or movements inside the body, often without visible muscle movement. A study conducted by Yale researchers, published in The American Journal of Medicine, found that 37% of Long COVID patients reported experiencing these internal tremors. Women are disproportionately affected by these symptoms, which are frequently accompanied by other Long COVID-related issues such as neurological disorders, chest pain, and heightened stress or anxiety. The cause of these tremors remains unclear, but they are thought to be linked to the nervous system and immune response triggered by the virus. Low-dose naltrexone (LDN) is being used experimentally as a treatment, showing some promise in alleviating these symptoms, although more research is needed to confirm its efficacy. The study emphasizes the importance of recognizing and addressing these often overlooked symptoms, as they can significantly impact the quality of life. Many patients report feeling isolated and dismissed by healthcare providers, making it crucial to improve understanding and treatment of Long COVID symptoms.
