Humans Are Fueling Global Warming By Just Breathing, Study Claims
A study led by Dr. Nicholas Cowan from the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology in Edinburgh suggests that humans are contributing to global warming through the gases they exhale. The study, published in the journal PLOS One, found that methane and nitrous oxide in human breath account for up to 0.1% of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions. The research involved analyzing emissions of methane and nitrous oxide from the breath of 104 adult volunteers in the UK. While every participant emitted nitrous oxide, methane was found in the breath of only 31% of participants. The study also noted that those who do not exhale methane are likely to release it through flatus (farting or burping). The researchers did not find any link between the gases in the breath and diets, indicating that diet changes are unlikely to significantly impact these emissions across the UK population.

Hour 2

Why are we in the middle of an obesity epidemic? Here is a possible explanation
The obesity epidemic, which has seen a significant rise in Denmark and globally, is explored in a study by Professor Emeritus Thorkild I. A. Sørensen. The study, published in various scientific journals, indicates that the obesity crisis began well before World War Two, predating modern factors like fast food and ultra-processed foods. Historical data from the 1930s and 40s show a pattern among schoolchildren and young men in Copenhagen, where the heaviest 25% continued to gain weight over time. This suggests an unknown process affecting a part of the population, contributing to the growing obesity epidemic. The study highlights that genetics alone cannot explain the rapid global increase in obesity, suggesting environmental changes play a crucial role. Sørensen proposes a theory linking obesity to social challenges and mental problems, suggesting that the brain may trigger fat storage in response to social stress. He emphasizes that social problems, including prejudice and stigmatization, may exacerbate obesity, and addressing these issues could be part of the solution.

Doctors place little value in what patients’ perspectives, jarring survey shows
A study conducted by the University of Cambridge and King’s College London reveals that many doctors place minimal importance on patients’ perspectives during diagnosis. Only four percent of the doctors surveyed considered patients’ self-assessments as one of the top three valuable sources of evidence. The study also uncovered a gender bias in diagnosis, with female patients more frequently told that mental factors, such as stress, were causing or worsening their symptoms. Male clinicians were more likely to suggest that patients were exaggerating their symptoms. The study involved over a thousand doctors and patients and focused on neuropsychiatric lupus as an example. It assessed how clinicians weigh different types of evidence, including brain scans, observations from family and friends, and patients’ self-assessments. The findings highlight the need for medical professionals to value patients’ views and work collaboratively with them.

Does Barbie need more doll options that portray diverse doctors?
A study examining medical-themed Barbie dolls finds a lack of diversity and accuracy in their portrayal of medical professionals and scientists. Researchers from Indiana University analyzed 92 Barbie career dolls in medical or scientific roles, evaluating their attire, accessories, and packaging against professional safety standards. The findings show that 98 percent of the dolls were depicted as adults, 93 percent as female, and 59 percent as White, with none having a visible disability. The majority of Barbie medical professional dolls (66%) were depicted as treating children, with only four percent shown working with adult patients. Despite being equipped with medical accessories, none of the dolls fully met the professional safety standards of their depicted fields. The study suggests a need for more accurate and professionally diverse representations of medical professional and scientist dolls by toy companies.
