Majority of Americans Eat Inflammatory Diets, Study Says A study by Ohio State University reveals that 57% of Americans consume diets that promote chronic inflammation, which is a risk factor for diseasessuch as heart disease, diabetes, obesity, depression, and cancer. The research analyzed data from over 34,000 adults using the dietary inflammatory index, a scale developed to measure how certain foods impact inflammation levels in the body. Pro-inflammatory foods, such as those high in sugar, processed ingredients, and refined oils, were prevalent, particularly among men, younger adults, non-Hispanic Black adults, and those with lower income and education levels. In contrast, anti-inflammatory diets, rich in fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats, were followed by only one-third of the participants. Lead author Rachel Meadows emphasized that small dietary changes—like adding garlic, ginger, or leafy greens—can significantly reduce inflammation. Other factors, such as access to healthy food, education, and lifestyle behaviors like stress and sleep, also play a role in managing inflammation. The study underscores the importance of diet in preventing inflammation-related diseases.

Time runs out for the Farm Bill The 2018 Farm Bill, officially known as the Agriculture Improvement Act, expired on September 30, 2024, after Congress failed to extend or pass a new version. The bill, whichgoverns nearly $900 billion in federal spending over five years, includes critical programs related to nutrition (such as SNAP), crop insurance, commodities, and conservation efforts. While certain programs will continue to receive funding through the end of the year, others are left in limbo. Key areas affected include international trade programs, bioenergy initiatives, and support for animal health and specialty crops. Additionally, programs aimed at helping socially disadvantaged, veteran, and beginning farmers have been paused. The bill’s expiration creates significant uncertainty in the agricultural sector, as these programs support many facets of U.S. agriculture, from rural development to environmental sustainability. Lawmakers are under pressure to act quickly, but political gridlock has delayed progress. The situation now leaves farmers, food assistance programs, and conservation efforts without clarity on future funding, further complicating long-term planning for many sectors tied to agriculture.

Policy Imperatives for Health Freedom The article calls for immediate reforms to protect health freedom in the U.S., ensuring individuals can make informed and independent medical decisions. It advocates banning medical mandates and repealing the Bayh-Dole Act, which allows government scientists to profit from publicly funded research. It also recommends the repeal of the Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA), which funds the FDA through payments from the pharmaceutical industry, raising concerns about conflicts of interest. Another key reform proposed is the overturning of the National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act (NCVIA), which shields vaccine manufacturers from liability for vaccine-related injuries. The article further calls for an end to water fluoridation and the release of genetically modified insects, both described as forms of forced medication. To enhance transparency and limit corporate influence, the article urges banning private donations to government agencies such as the FDA and CDC, and implementing a five-year cooling-off period before federal employees can transition to work in industries they previously regulated. These reforms aim to restore public trust in healthcare decisions and protect individual liberties.

Study finds toddlers get nearly half their calories from ultra-processed foods A recent study conducted by researchers from University College London reveals that nearly half (47%) of toddlers’ daily calorie intake in the UK comes from ultra-processed foods (UPFs), with this proportion rising to 59% by the age of seven. The study analyzed the dietary habits of over 2,500 children and found that the early years of a child’s life are heavily influenced by foods such as flavored yogurts and wholegrain cereals, which, despite being considered relatively healthy, are high in added sugars and salts. As children grow older, their consumption shifts toward more ultra-processed items such as sugary cereals, white bread, and processed snacks. Researchers warned that excessive consumption of UPFs at such a young age may establish long-term eating habits that favor unhealthy, processed foods over whole, nutrient-rich options, posing a risk for future health issues such as obesity and metabolic disorders. The study emphasizes the role of aggressive food marketing and the affordability of UPFs, which makes it challenging for parents to opt for healthier alternatives. The researchers advocate for policy changes that limit the promotion of unhealthy foods aimed at children, while also suggesting government subsidies for healthier, less-processed food options to encourage better dietary habits.

Health Freedom Expo – Keynote by Jonathan Emord on FDA Censorship and Legal Battles for Health Freedom At the Health Freedom Expo in Indianapolis, Jonathan Emord,General Counsel for the Alliance for Natural Health (ANH), delivered a powerful keynote speech addressing FDA censorship and the legal challenges in the fight for health freedom. Emord highlighted how federal agencies, particularly the FDA, have restricted access to essential health information, often under pressure from pharmaceutical and food industry interests. He provided examples of FDA censorship, such as preventing cherry and walnut producers from making scientifically backed health claims about their products. Emord discussed ANH’s legal strategy to push back against this overreach, citing two critical Supreme Court rulings—Loper Bright, which curtails agency authority, and Axon Enterprises, which allows individuals and organizations to directly challenge agency actions on constitutional grounds. He also criticized COVID-19 mandates as violations of personal liberty, framing them as government overreach in the healthcare sphere. Emord called for continued efforts to protect individuals’ rights to access truthful, independent health information, free from interference by government agencies or corporate interests. His speech underscored the growing need for transparency and reform in regulatory processes impacting health freedom.
